Design principles

Business Telephony Starts with the Call Flow

The right phone system depends on how calls enter the business, who needs to answer them and how employees work across desks, departments and locations.

  1. 01

    Call Flow

Reception, hunt groups, IVR menus, business hours and voicemail are defined around how callers should reach the right person.

  2. 02

    Users & Locations

Departments, mobile users and multiple locations help determine how the system should be structured and where calls need to reach.

  3. 03

    Network Readiness

Switching, PoE, voice segmentation and internet connectivity are reviewed because reliable IP telephony depends on the network beneath it.

  4. 04

    Capacity & Growth

Extension count, concurrent call requirements, licensing and expected growth should be considered when selecting and configuring the platform.

Common questions

IP Telephony & PABX FAQs

01Can IP phones use our existing network?

Often, provided the existing network has suitable switching, PoE capacity where required, bandwidth and voice configuration. AMSS reviews the available infrastructure before the telephony solution is finalised.

02Can we keep our existing telephone numbers?

Number portability depends on the telecom provider, existing service and applicable porting requirements. It should be checked early because the porting process can affect migration and cutover planning.

03Can we add extensions later?

Usually, provided the selected platform has sufficient capacity and licensing. Expected growth should be considered during the initial design.

04Do you provide hosted or cloud-based phone systems?

Yes. Where appropriate, AMSS can provide supported hosted or cloud-based telephony options alongside traditional PABX solutions, depending on the organisation's users, connectivity and operating requirements.

05What is the difference between a traditional PABX and IP telephony?

Traditional PABX systems may use conventional telephone architecture, while IP telephony carries voice over an IP network and can support features such as network-based extensions, supported softphones and more flexible integration. The appropriate approach depends on the existing infrastructure, required features and migration requirements.
