Wi-Fi & Network Design Around Users, Devices & the Space

Coverage alone does not define a reliable network. Device density, building materials, wired capacity, traffic separation and internet connectivity all influence the design.

    Coverage & Capacity

    Access-point placement is planned around both signal coverage and the number and type of devices expected in each area, particularly where user density is high.

  2. 02

    Building & Environment

    Walls, concrete cores, glass, metal structures, shelving and room layout can affect wireless performance. Placement is therefore based on the actual environment rather than a generic coverage radius.

  3. 03

    Wired Network & PoE

    Wireless access points, IP phones, cameras and other PoE-capable devices depend on the switching, uplinks and cabling behind them. Not every switch or cable run supports the same PoE load, so port capacity, Power over Ethernet requirements and backbone bandwidth are considered together as part of the network design.

    Segmentation & Access

    Staff, guest, voice, CCTV and building-system traffic may require different levels of access. VLANs and network policies are planned according to the systems and security requirements of the environment.

01Why is Wi-Fi weak or slow in part of the building?

Wireless performance can be affected by access-point placement, building materials, interference, channel use, device density or the wired connection behind the access point. AMSS reviews the environment and network before recommending whether configuration, relocation, additional coverage or infrastructure changes are required.

02How many wireless access points do we need?

There is no fixed number based only on floor area. The design depends on room layout, building materials, user density, device types, required coverage and the applications being used.

03Should guest Wi-Fi be separate from the business network?

In most business environments, guest access should be logically separated from internal business systems. The exact approach depends on the network architecture and security requirements, with access policies configured according to the services guests need to reach.

04Can the same network support CCTV, phones and access control?

Yes, when the network is designed with sufficient switching capacity, Power over Ethernet, bandwidth and logical separation for the connected systems. VLANs and traffic policies can be used to organise voice, video and access control traffic according to the project requirements.

05Can AMSS upgrade an existing network instead of replacing everything?

Yes. AMSS can review the existing switches, access points, cabling, internet connectivity and network configuration to determine what can be retained, reconfigured, expanded or replaced.
